ESP Basics - General Arrangement (3 of 6)

Electrostatic Precipitators are generally divided into various independent electrical sections called "fields" or "zones".  Each field is made up of a series of vertical collecting plates spread across the gas flow.  The high voltage electrodes are arranged between each pair of adjacent collecting plates

The following example represents an ESP with three fields in the direction of gas flow.

 

The above example represents an ESP with an efficiency of 97.6%.  Of the 100g/Nm3 entering the ESP, 2.4g/Nm3 escapes in the outlet stream.  This example shows the rule of "diminishing return" with an ESP.  Each progressive field has a lower efficiency than the previous field.  It's important to note that the inlet field does the majority of the dust collection with nearly 80% caught here.

Please note that this is purely a ficticious example.
